Reports have Bryan Holaday coming up from Toledo; Avila to DL?

Alex Avila's hamstring was supposed to be healed up enough to go again on Tuesday, but he lasted just through the fifth inning. He said after the game he was going for an MRI to see what the extent of the damage was.

"It was feeling a lot better than it was in the last series. I was hoping, the work I was doing, and the way I was feeling, that I was going to be able to play — maybe not at 100 percent, but enough to be fine," Avila said after the game. "Just wasn’t the case. And we’ve just gotta figure it out. ...
"I’m going to go get an MRI right after I get done with you guys, and we’ll go from there."

We'd probably have left it at that until Tuesday, were it not for a chance meeting in the Fifth Third Ballpark parking lot, by Toledo Blade reporter John Wagner and two members of the Toledo Mud Hens organization. Wagner ran into Phil Nevin, the manager of the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate, and catcher Bryan Holaday.

Nevin told Wagner that Holaday was being called up to the Tigers.

Detroit already has three catchers currently on the active roster: Avila, Omir Santos, and Gerald Laird, who is dealing with a hamstring issue of his own.

Even if Avila's hamstring injury was more severe than anticipated, Santos and Laird should be able to handle the catching duties without an issue ... that is, unless Laird's hamstring is worse than anticipated, as well.

Holaday is not on the Tigers' 40-man roster, so there would have to be another move made before the team could purchase the contract of the 24-year-old Holaday. The team's sixth round pick in 2010, Holaday is hitting .248 with no homers and 10 RBI, 36 games into his first season at Triple-A.

If the transaction does go through, it would give the Tigers 22 moves in the span of the team's first 54 games of the season.

"I will say this in defense of this club, we’ve had more moves in the first two months of a season probably that I’ve ever been involved in anything. We really have not gotten in sync. By the time we get in sync, we lose two more guys to the DL, we’ve got two more young guys that not everyone knows too well, or a different player coming in," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said after the game. "Sometimes, it’s hard to get in sync. But we will."
