When Josh Phegley's bounding grounder made it over the 6-foot-8 Doug Fister on the mound, the Tigers' new shortstop made a charging dive, and as he went to the ground, flicked it with his wrist to first, getting the runner.

The play ranked No. 1 on ESPN's Sports Center Top Plays at the end of the night.

When the Tigers acquired Iglesias at before the non-waiver trade deadline, general manager Dave Dombrowski relayed the hopes that the youngster would live up to the scouting reports the Tigers had on him — while trying to temper the expectations enough so that they didn't overwhelm him.

"This guy is special, defensively," said Dombrowski said. "This is not our scouting report. Our scouting reports have him as an All-Star shortstop. I don’t know if he’ll be that, or not, but some of our scouting reports do.

"Somebody that has seen him play just sent me a note and said ‘In all my years in the game, the only two defensive shortstops I’ve seen that are better are Ozzie (Smith) and (Omar) Vizquel.’ "

Is that an evaluation of his arm? His hands? His feet? The whole package?

"The whole package. Now, I don’t know if he’s that good or not, because I haven’t seen him. But that’s somebody that’s seen him play a lot," Dombrowski said.

"When I just talked to (Boston GM) Ben Cherington, he said ‘I know you have seen a lot of players play shortstop in your career, but you will see this guy make plays you’ve never seen before.’

"Now, I don’t want to put that on his back, but he’s a real good shortstop."
