VIDEO: Watch J.D. Martinez take Max Scherzer deep on a tape-measure shot

J.D. Martinez, who hit a tape-measure home run Tuesday, already had one that ranked among the longest in Comerica Park history.

On May 15, 2013, when Martinez was still a member of the Houston Astros, he hit a two-run blast off Max Scherzer that went 464 feet, off the honor wall in left-center field, under the Willie Horton and Ty Cobb signs.

It's ranked as the longest home run by a visiting player in the park's history.

Here's the video:

VIDEO: J.D. Martinez robs Chris Davis of a home run

J.D. Martinez came to the Tigers with a reputation as not being a great defensive outfielder, but he's worked hard to turn that around.

"I just don't want to be the guy in the outfield that's a hazard," he said recently.

He was anything but a hazard in right field Friday night, robbing Chris Davis of a home run to end the third inning, then leaping to catch a sharp liner off the bat of Jimmy Paredes to end the fourth.

Here's video of the homer-robbing catch:

VIDEO: Watch Alex Avila dive into the stands to catch a foul ball

Alex Avila has played at first base before — mostly as an underclassman in college — but very little as a professional.

"It’s a little different, because I hadn’t played there regularly since college. There’s a different aspect, there’s a different angle to field. You’re more used to looking at everybody," he said before Saturday's game.

"Obviously, there’s different fundamentals to go along with that, which I have the basics of. I’m not going to be amazing over there, by any means. I’m going to be adequate."
He looked like an old pro on this play in his first career big-league start at first, robbing Toronto's Russell Martin with a catch on a foul ball in the fourth inning.

VIDEO: Watch Gorkys Hernandez's baserunning gaffe here

Former Tigers prospect Gorkys Hernandez was called upon as a pinch runner in Tuesday's 14-inning affair between the Pirates and Tigers, but it didn't go like he'd planned.

He ended up getting confused about whether a fly ball to right-center field was caught or not, missed second base on his way back by, and was called out on appeal.

That play eventually was the basis for a scoring change that charged Tigers reliever Alex Wilson with the loss.
